with Fay Adams 10am – 4pm

Poetry is a particularly beautiful medium with which both gratitude and awe can be expressed. Arguably nothing captures these feelings better! Gratitude is perhaps more soft and connecting, while awe’s heart-stopping, jaw-dropping tingles connect us to what is vaster than us. Both provide us with a particular kind of helpful inner alchemy that nudges us closer to what is precious and mysterious about existence. Research tells us that these feelings influence our sense of self and our relationship to the world, bringing humility, expansion, generosity and a loosening of egocentricity.

On this retreat day we’ll receive a diverse range of poems on this theme in a mindful way. We’ll be allowing ourselves to let go of figuring poems out or feeling we should ‘get’ them and instead we’ll practice trusting that they will work on us if we can sit in an embodied and present way. Each poem takes us on a journey and many poems have a gift to give us. Where will this day take you and what gifts will you receive?

Expect some time for introducing the theme and sharing experiences in the first and last sessions, with the main bulk of the day in friendly silence.

A message from Tutor Fay Adams

”I’ve always loved poetry, favourite poets being Mary Oliver, Hafiz and Rilke (amongst others). But in recent years I’ve developed a new relationship to it, thanks to mindfulness. Like many I was taught to analyse poems at school. Now instead I rest in my body and heart and allow the poem to touch me. In this way poems speak to me in a right brain way, through feeling and metaphor, before I think about it. It feels like receiving a gift! This practice is what I now share with people on the Mystical Poetry meets Mindfulness courses and participants report that it opens them up to poetry in a whole new way.
This course has been running twice a year for 3 years now and as far as I know it’s the only course which brings poetry and mindfulness together! I’m so happy to witness how the groups become a very precious space of contemplation and connection. Many of the participants from both the UK and different parts of the world, stay in touch and continue with long-lasting (online) friendships and ongoing meetings sharing poetry and the poetry of daily life. ”

Last Echo – Poem by Navin Arora https://www.mindfulnessassociation.net/guest-blogs/last-echo-poem-by-navin-arora/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=last-echo-poem-by-navin-arora Tue, 21 Jun 2022 13:19:48 +0000 https://www.mindfulnessassociation.net/?p=25950 Felt really quite excited as I headed to Samye Ling for the Mindfulness Association reunion weekend. Even the jarring potholes didn’t dampen my spirits! But I struggled…Unable to get into the practices. The inner critic was on full volume. By the Saturday morning coffee break I was ready to give up and go home. So I lay down at the back of the room, feeling very heavy and just surrendered. Then I heard the last echo and it all changed…A lightness, a warmth, less in my head more in my body. A playfulness woke up within me. Less serious, more connected to myself and people in the room. One strawberry in a field of strawberries.A few days later a poem appeared. The title is a two word anagram which includes a friend who helped a lot of people that weekend.Last EchoThe armour weighs heavyNo room, no beatWhere is the space? Can’t feel my feetThe battle is lostSurrender, surrenderLie down, let goMind, just wanderMelody to last echo,The silence is blissA soft voice within me‘Not so serious’The flavour is fullThe strawberry heart beatsThe body is warmCan totally feel my feet! The young soul is awokenThe I becomes the WeLess lonely, more connectedThe forest and the treeThe last echo is heardForgive and be freeThe drop is the oceanIt will always be We.

This inspiring new 6 week course starts on Thursday 31 March (7pm -8.30pm) (UK TIME)

Are you a poetry lover? In this course we’ll be hovering at the crossover between mindfulness practice and spiritual or contemplative practice. We’ll see what the words of mystics from diverse religious backgrounds – Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism – can teach us.

Poetry has a special power to reach the heart, and mindfulness can clear a space for us to be able to receive and digest the wisdom in a poem. What a marvellous combination! Letting the ancient poems of the world’s mystics into our practice may offer comfort, open the mind/heart, inspire insight or touch us where we need to feel.

Fay will take us on a journey into the mythical & mystical in her new 5 week course which begins on the 31March.

                            Startled by God

                                  Not like
                        A lone beautiful bird,
These poems now rise in great white flocks
                    Against my mind’s vast hills
                            Startled by God
                          Breaking a branch
                             When his foot
                                 Touches
                                   Earth
                                   Near
                                    Me
